Jody Townend’s 5 to Follow at the Dublin Racing Festival
Hi everyone,
It’s one of the biggest weekends in the National Hunt calendar—the Dublin Racing Festival—and I’ve picked out five horses to follow across the two days. There’s top-class action throughout, and with Cheltenham just around the corner, we could see some big performances from future stars. Here’s who I’ll be keeping an eye on:
Saturday
🕐 1:50 - Willie de Houelle
He’s a big price at 33/1, but I wouldn’t write him off. If he can switch off and settle, he’s got a real chance. He’s been a bit too keen the last couple of days, but I think people are forgetting how much ability he has.
⏳ 3:30 - Gallopin Des Champs (Nap of the weekend!)
For me, he can’t be beaten. He looked better than ever at Christmas, and I expect him to confirm his place as the best in the division.
🟣 4:35 - Sortudo (I ride in the bumper!)
It’s an open race, but I’m hopeful for a big run. He had to do it the hard way last time in front and got run down late by a smart mare. That experience should bring him on, and if he can race off the bridle better this time, I think he’ll be right there at the finish.
Sunday
🕜 1:40 - Redemption Day
A horse I’m very fond of, he’s given me some brilliant days. He got tired at Christmas on his first run back and first try over hurdles, but if he can bring his bumper form to the table here, he should be bang there.
🎯 4:25 - Carrigmoornaspruce (Against my own ride!)
I ride Bambino Fever in the mares’ bumper, but I think Carrigmoornaspruce will be very hard to beat. She was impressive last time beating the geldings, and with Declan Queally’s yard flying, she’s the one for me.
Enjoy the weekend’s racing—hopefully, we see some stars for the future!
