Compas Clues with Micheál Orlandi

We are delighted to welcome back Micheál Orlandi of Compass Stallions to sponsor for the fourth year here at Naas Racecourse. Starfield Stud is based in Mullingar, Co. Westmeath and is home to stallions such as Dubawi Legend, Kuroshio, King of Change, Far Above & more. We caught up with Micheál for a quick Q&A ahead of his sponsorship of 3 races on our opening meeting of the flat season this Sunday.

What is your background in the game?

I've no background in the industry really but I suppose I must mention my first pony, Scoobie. He had a big part to play!

How many stallions currently stand at Starfield Stud?

At the moment 7.

What does your day-to-day routine look like?

It normally starts in the covering shed, involves some vetting and finishes in the covering shed.

Which of your stallions do you consider a value sire?

I think they are all value! From the first impressions of the Dubawi Legend foals, I could not be happier with them and breeders are coming back in force supporting him again. I think he’s great value at his price, being a son of Dubawi.

Far Above will have his first runners this season, is there any in particular you are looking forward to?

Oh, I am looking forward to seeing all of them, it's hard to pick out a few.

Of the stallions retired to stud for 2024 season, which do you particularly like?

I remember Paddington winning at Naas last year, I like his profile. Native Trail was a Champion 2yr old and just pipped our own Dubawi Legend. He must have a chance. In the UK, Chaldean and Shaquille have a lot going for them.

What are the qualities you look for when purchasing a stallion?

A combination of Performance, Pedigree & Physical.

In your opinion what is the main contributing factor to producing tough sound racehorses?

Lots of feed, good land & plenty of galloping.

Favorite racehorse of all time?

I loved following Sea The Stars, he was something special. Closer to home Lola Showgirl, she helped create some wonderful memories.

Favourite racecourse?

Oh that’s difficult, so many but of course Naas in Ireland & I love the trilogy of Ascot, Goodwood and York in the UK.

Your favourite sport outside of racing?

I love all sorts, was obsessed with cycling years ago but I suppose I enjoy watching football and follow Juventus & Aston Villa.
